Bee pollinating an Artichoke
|
|
It’s always buzzing in the
Sustainable Agriculture class. As part of supporting The Farm, we wanted to add
bee hives. Pollination can give the crops a big boost since 30% of our food is
pollinated by bees.
As part of the final project, Roy
organized an effort to start two bee hives at Redwood. He’s been a beekeeper
for four years, has over 30 hives of his own and wants to teach others about
the value that bees add to a farm.
This has been a big community
undertaking with support from both the local bee club and community. Members of
the Marin Beekeepers Association have rallied behind this project by donating
lots of equipment, bee boxes and bees.
We also put together a crowd
funding promotion on Kickstarter so others in the community could donate funds.
In three weeks, we successfully raised over $600. This will help pay for
protective gear and any remaining equipment that’s needed. With the help of the
class, we cleared a space near our school and we're now ready for hives.
